5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Embarking on a Solo Travel Adventure

Solo travel can be a life-changing experience, offering new perspectives, personal growth, and unforgettable adventures. However, before you pack your bags and set off on a journey of self-discovery, it’s important to ask yourself a few key questions. These five questions will help you determine if solo travel is right for you, how to approach it strategically, and how to make the most of your adventure. Listen to Episode 3 of The Solo Coach Podcast for a deeper exploration!

1. How Do You Know That Solo Travel Is Right for You Right Now?

It’s easy to get caught up in the dreamy images of solo travellers backpacking through breathtaking landscapes. But take a moment to dig deeper. What is driving your desire to travel solo?

For me, solo travel was about breaking free from routine, finding clarity in my career, and experiencing different cultures firsthand. For you, it might be a need for adventure, a way to step outside your comfort zone, or even a response to a major life change. The key is to ensure that solo travel is a conscious decision rather than an escape from something unresolved. Travel won’t necessarily fix everything, but it can be a powerful tool for self-discovery when approached with the right mindset.

2. How Can You Be Strategic About Your Trip?

Solo travel doesn’t mean quitting your job tomorrow and heading off with a one-way ticket. Planning strategically can help you make the most of your adventure without unnecessary risks.

When I first considered traveling, I negotiated a four-month sabbatical from work. This allowed me to experience solo travel while keeping a safety net in place. Later, when I committed to a full year of travel, I combined my journey with career growth by training as a transformational life coach while on the road.

Think about how you can align your trip with long-term goals. Could you take a career break instead of resigning? Work remotely? Gain new skills while traveling? Being intentional about your trip will make it more rewarding and sustainable.

3. What Obstacles Are Standing in Your Way, and How Can You Overcome Them?

Common obstacles to solo travel include finances, career concerns, and relationships. The good news? There are solutions for all of them.

  • Finances: Solo travel doesn’t have to be expensive. Volunteering through platforms like Workaway or picking up temporary jobs can help stretch your budget. Planning ahead and setting savings goals can also make a big difference.

  • Career: A career break doesn’t have to mean career suicide. Many employers value the skills gained from solo travel—adaptability, problem-solving, and cultural awareness. Some companies even offer sabbaticals or remote work opportunities.

  • Relationships: Being away from loved ones can be tough, but strong relationships can withstand time apart. Regular video calls and visits can help maintain those connections. My own experience taught me that absence can sometimes make the heart grow fonder.

4. What Are You Hoping to Learn About Yourself on This Journey?

Solo travel isn’t just about seeing new places—it’s about self-discovery. What personal questions are you hoping to answer?

For me, I wanted to figure out my next steps in life and career. Others might seek confidence, independence, or clarity on future goals. Having a sense of purpose, even if it’s just to embrace spontaneity, will make your trip more meaningful. Be open to the idea that the questions you start with may evolve along the way.

5. What Sacrifices Are You Willing to Make?

The size of your success is proportional to the sacrifices you’re willing to make. Solo travel often requires giving up certain comforts—financial security, possessions, and routine.

Before I set off on my year-long journey, I sold my car, let go of my job security, and adjusted to living with fewer material possessions. But the trade-off was worth it—I gained incredible experiences, a new career path, and personal growth that I wouldn’t have achieved otherwise.

Ask yourself: What are you willing to give up in exchange for the adventure of a lifetime? If the rewards outweigh the sacrifices, you know you’re ready.

Final Thoughts

Solo travel is not just about seeing the world—it’s about seeing yourself in a new way. By asking yourself these five questions, you’ll be better prepared to make the most of your journey. Whether you’re looking for adventure, personal growth, or a new direction in life, the world is waiting for you to take that first step.
